How to Plan an Around the World Trip
So, you’re planning on heading off to experience everything the planet has to offer? Prepare yourself for the trip of a lifetime, and then some. Something this massive and life-changing needs planning and preparation to a major degree, so it’s important to make sure you have all bases covered before you embark on your adventure.
Here are a few things you need to bear in mind when you begin to plan your trip of a lifetime.
It’s no good heading off with just enough money, you need something to fall back on. Before you go, save every single penny you can spare, and it’s also a good idea to take a credit card for back up. Don’t be tempted to dib into this if you can’t afford it, so only keep it for emergencies. Remember to inform you bank that you may be using your card overseas, to reduce the possibility of your account being blocked from suspected fraud.
You need to look into how you’re going to get around, whether you can buy rail passes etc, and whether you need visas to visit certain places. You are obviously going to need a visa at some stage, so plan your route accordingly, and look into what you need. Also make sure that your passport is well in date.
You are probably going to need vaccinations, and it’s always worthwhile making sure your regular vaccinations, such as tetanus and polio, are up to date. Check with your doctor what you need, and whether you need anti-malaria medication also. Do this about a month before you’re heading off.
Never ever attempt to travel without this. You need adequate insurance to cover you for the duration of your trip, however around the world jaunts require extra insurance, because you’re going to be crossing borders etc. Talk to your insurance company, and be sure to shop around, before you decide on a particular policy. Remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions too, and keep a copy of the paperwork in your emails, and with someone back home, with the emergency number stored in your phone.
Do you rent? Do you own your house? Do you live with parents? You need to give some thought to what you’re going to do with your living arrangements whilst you’re away. If you own your house, have you considered renting it out for the duration of your trip? If this doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, then can someone call in on the house and check it over whilst you’re away? If you rent, you’re probably going to have to give notice on your place, or pay rent for the duration of your trip. You also need to think about where you’re going to stay once you arrive home. Don’t be so focused on your trip that you fail to see the bigger picture.
Cancel any recurring payments/services
Do you have a milkman call? Do you have a newspaper delivery? Remember to cancel these!
Some airlines do specific deals for around the world trips, so when you’re doing your research at the initial stage, look into this. This idea will give you peace of mind that your air travel in some degree is covered.
Planning an around the world trip is a huge deal, and it’s not something you can just fly by the seat of your pants with. My advice? Write lists, lots and lots of lists!
